Coastal
Stretching along the western edge of the district, Coastal Rangitīkei offers a quieter side of Aotearoa.
From the fishing settlement of Scotts Ferry to the sandy beaches of Koitiata, this is a place for beach walks, surfcasting, birdlife and slowing down to the rhythm of the tide.
Coastal Rangitīkei is known for:
- Wild black iron-sand beaches (Jandals are recommended in summer!)
- Fishing
- Sunset views
Scotts Ferry
One of the district's best-known coastal settlements, Scott's Ferry is a little slice of Heav-Inn. Located near the mouth of the Rangitīkei River, it has long been a favourite spot for fishing, whitebaiting and beach holidays.
Scott’s Ferry features a restored historic barge used during the height of regional river trade to take people across the mouth of the Rangitīkei River. With easy beach access and plenty of room to spread out, it's a great place to spend a day by the water.
Koitiata and Turakina Beach
Koitiata is a quiet, coastal village located at the mouth of the Turakina River and Turakina Beach. Popular with anglers, walkers and those looking to escape the crowds, it's the kind of beach where you'll often have more space than people.
The village is a welcoming overnight stopping point for walkers traversing the Te Araroa Trail.
Beach Access
Both Scotts Ferry and Koitiata - Turakina Beach are easily reached by road from Bulls and the surrounding district. Pack a picnic, bring your fishing gear and remember that conditions can change quickly along this stretch of coast.
Always check tides and weather before heading out.
